This is the Zealot faction skin for the Basilisk capitol ship in the MMORTS game Novus Aeterno. The Zealots are basically religious nuts hence all the gold and Gothic style decorations.

Well the first thing I thought when I saw it was "those bits sticking out don't look very practical, you'd have to be crazy to build a ship like that", which of course it turns out is entirely intentional, so job done I'd say. :)

I hear the Space Marine Anthem (Angels of Death) when I look at this...only from sheer epicness...

What kind of art style is this? I've been really curious about this clean cut, realistic digital art, but I never really ran into a book, pdf, or website on this subject. Regardless, very impressive =)

Thanks, its a mix of photo references like textures and photos of objects that are manipulated and then painted on top of, its quite a common style and the results are quite different from say an image painted just using brushes

I see now. So it's almost like cutouts that are 'bent', and then shaded or lightened accordingly (in a nutshell). Thanks for sharing =) One last question would be where you learned this awesome art style?

I learnt mostly by looking at work by Daniel Dociu and a few other artists that use a similar technique then I just messed around till I felt comfortable, its not as simple as warping photo references you do have to paint over areas as well

Interesting design. What is the purpose of all the little flanges coming off near the front? They look cool, but they also look like they'd get broken fairly easily.

The people that built the ship are religious fanatics, mostly interested in intimidation and showing off their wealth and influence as such their ships are heavily decorated often with lots of gold and superficial ornaments, the spikes and overall decoration is more of a symbol than actually useful

Ah, that makes sense. Still, the ship would probably lose most of the little spikes and things in a fight.

Hmm, the ring-sections in front remind me very much of one of the Amarr Jumpgates in EVE Online.

Nice :D

Yeah I see what you mean, those spikes make it look similar. Although this one doesn't launch ships but huge cannon shells the size of sky scrapers hehe.
