D.S.I Heavy Harvester Platform by AdamBurn D.S.I Heavy Harvester Platform by AdamBurn
Print available on InPrint here: www.inprnt.com/gallery/adam_bu…

Two things inspired this monstrosity, one was the movie Moon where they have set up a mining operation on the moon to harvest Helium 3 (needed for fusion reactors) and the announcement from Deep Space Industries (D.S.I) that they are going to start mining asteroids and the Moon in the near future.
I thought that seeing as it's on the Moon you wouldn't really need to worry about things like pollution and noise so you can build them big and loud. So as part of a running series about strip mining the Moon bare I give you the H.H.P (Heavy Harvester Platform) this one is called Leviathan and is number 2 of a fleet of 10 that slowly move over the surface of the Moon at about 3 mph and rip up the surface extracting the Helium 3 in its on board processing plant. Smaller transports take the Helium 3 to nearby depots where it's fired at the Earth in large containers.

It's damn dirty as behind each machine is several miles of dust that takes some time to settle and also it leaves behind a trench about 20 metres deep, but damn does it look awesome... Also it has no brakes.

Here are the other images in the series.

The details in this leave me awestruck. I love the crispness of your pieces
do you use brushes to create the various structures or do you sketch and refine from there?

If they had one of these in Moon, they wouldn't have to waste millions of dollars on a bunch of clones...

This is a fine scene/work sir, also the irony? the first thing that went through my mind in the first half a second of seeing this - the same movie Moon that you say inspired you, I can see how, and this is quite the improvement 100 fold from what's in that movie XD kudos

I can not remember the title but you would not know you inspire one speaking of a man who works in a lunar station film to reap a new source of energy, and discovers that his company has since made clone him for economy, and that following an accident he finds himself living with a single company as a clone ^ ^?

(sorry in advance for this unnecessary question, and I have remembered you as pandent that I wrote is "Moon" ^ ^). Otherwise very good work.

if I'm sorry for lack of spelling I'm french and my english is bad can.

Quite impressive work, I'm quite familiar with DSI, and it's a quite exciting prospect, wouldn't you agree
I'm quite impressed with this design, its great work on your end. I can't imagine that it's very cost effective to not only build it, but actually LAUNCH it though XD I mean, think of current costs for getting things into orbit around Earth. 8,000$ per pound, 10,000$ per pound? Yikes!

Yep, just wait a few decades until they develop the technology to create individual Carbon Nanofibers long enough, and with a cost effective enough to even consider the project XD

A lasting cloud of dust is something hardly possible on the moon, where there is no atmosphere to impede the particles falling back on the surface. The large size of the thing is more explainable though than on Earth-based pictures: weaker gravity helps with that.

All this has no impact on the picture though, which is simply fine anyway!

Yup it does but that's the nature of a lot of fast concept art, it's often easier to pick bits off existing images to help beef up concepts to show the idea in more detail whilst sticking to a small time scale. It's pretty standard though it's less than 50%, the only bits used would be the front section, the rest is actually a mix of various vehicles and mostly parts of the huge mining machines used in real life.

Due to it's mass if it were to stop so quickly it would cause structural damage across the whole vehicle, instead it has to slow down over a long distance.

It would be a tad unfortunate if it couldn't slow down and impacted a crater wall.

My skills are nowhere near the level of this monster the most I've done is get a mobile rig on the home world and mine there (Their Helium 3 is called Kethane and its everywhere) I mostly meant it as a joke... mostly :P but I might try and get a Survey Vehicle in the same design as your who know maybe I'll secede!

This is the most awesome thing Ive seen in art in many months!! I love how you have used your colors to give of a very, very realistic design, something NASA might be building in the future. Reminds me of both the movie Moon and Sunshine, some of the tech seems very believable and well referenced! :) Makes me happy to see something like this!! Keep it up man!
