Dark Angel Gunship by AdamBurn Dark Angel Gunship by AdamBurn
Part of a commission, the brief described these massive powerful gunships that were capable of dishing out lots of pain and were able to cloak and carry a decent compliment of troops and small vehicles. The ship needed to look powerful and sinister so I went for a duel mode design, the front bends down during flight and combat to better protect the undercarriage from frontal attacks as well as giving the weapon arrays a better field of fire, when it lands the front section raises and the stabilising fins retract.

Has some design elements similar to those used in the Helghast Navy as seen throughout the Killzone series.

Amazing art work. I really like the design of the helicopter. Amazing coloring. Well done! :D

How the hell is that supposed to fly? Where are the engines? It looks cool, but god damn is it weird.

Nice, very predatory, reminds somewhat of AFF... that is if it is AFF.

Wow, this thing looks evil love the design Adam.
Quick question how big is this thing?

Well there's a viewport at the front, and assuming it's about 8 feet high, this thing is huge.

Meaning it'll probably be rather cumbersome and therefore have limited combat effectiveness unless its got great engines and controls

I think this looks more like a extremely armored dropship/orbital bombardment station than what people commonly associate with a 'gunship'.

Yeah, I see where your coming from but the large mass would provide problems for the drop ships load and manoeuvring capabilities

Problems offset by having way too much armor. But I agree, it would make a better small capital ship than monstrous gunship/dropship.

How on earth does that thing generate enough lift to stay up!? It must have to fly at some insane speed.

It's primarily a space bound vessel though advances in engine tech and inertial dampeners allows it to fly in atmosphere pretty well :ahoy:

wait a second
shouldnt inertial dampeners slow you down?
how on earth does that work?!
(inertia is like momentum right?)

Its an interior thing, its a very very common sci-fi bit of kit which stops inertia inside a ship, so if it accelerates to high speeds really really fast you feel nothing thus allowing for crazy speeds and acceleration.

so its like your wearing a seatbelt, except wildly more expensive and probably consumes copious amounts of energy.

Yeah but a seatbelt only stops your whole body moving it doesn't protect against g-forces which even with a seatbelt will kill you if you start or stop too fast, your insides actually keep moving its quite a disgusting thought but at a high enough acceleration with a seatbelt youd look fine on the outside but your insides will be liquefied haha. Inertial dampeners nullify g-forces.

Pffff, gimme a seatbelt anyday, the G force just adds to the excitement. Also adds to internal bleeding, but theres that saying remember; 'No internal bleeding, no gain.'

so it WAS antigrav bullshit
i think it would have been hilarious if it was made out of aerogel though.

you have a fair point, but most habitable planets have an earthlike gravity and usually an earthlike or less atmosphere, ego that thing should fly like a brick, with a lead pipe attached, being driven by a one legged camel who also has arthritis.
Unless it has antigrav shit, in which case all logical arguements go flying out the window, like a brick, with a lead pipe attached....

No known material ;p and we do quite good with solids that are nearly light as air (but about solidity it's another question ^^')

There is aerogel, but then again the ship certainly does not look like its made of that stuff...

Ooh, i just learnt something new.
Idk, could be painted.
Also it probably wouldnt be a good idea to make a combat vessel out of something as brittle as that.

Well you know what could've been done? If you're gonna go into stealth mode. If the ship enables this function, it will also disable the lights without human/alien control
