Fortress World by AdamBurn Fortress World by AdamBurn
A print of this painting can be bought here [link]

Here is the final image from the submissions to the Luminarium, its linked to my last image Shield World Construction, this image shows the interior of the dyson sphere structure looking up at the sun.... or down depends where you are inside. the view is from about 1 mile off the surface just above the clouds and looking up at the huge sentinel towers that house the massive armada of the forerunners, here you can see some of the huge ships disembarking from the towers as well as a horde of smaller sentinels which anyone who has read the Halo novel Ghosts of Onyx should recognize.

Its a little confusing to knwo whats going on but the previous image of the outside view works perfectly to give the viewer a much better understanding of this image, that idea for the other image and linking them so you the viewers could undertand it better came from one of my house mates Brett, a great idea and one I think works perfectly when both images are viewed side by side.

Enjoy

After your last one, "Shield World Construction," to me this piece seems flat. As usual, the technical side of things are flawless (ships looks awesome, high quality planet texture, etc) but to me it seems like you half asses this one. Unlike many of your other pieces, when i look at this i see a picture instead of being pulled into a new world. In some of your other pieces you also have something very close to the POV that further emphasizes depth. Like in this one, i would have loved to see one of those ships in the top right or left corners but super close, lots of detail, almost popping out of the screen.

But I love the sense of size in the bottom left. Looking at the small ships i can just feel how fucking HUGE those towers are.
I'm also really enjoying the new perspective. For me that throws things off in a good way, making you step back and look again.

All in all, not your strongest piece, but still mind blowing at how pretty it looks. Great work as usual man. :D

Another one that isn't that bad at all. The ship on the bottom left almost appears to be bursting through the clouds on a course perhaps close to the sun or perhaps going by toward another destination.

The sun itself is well done with the background planet looking alright, though its texture could be improved a bit.

Adding to the immersion are, what I'm assuming to be, fighter craft that create sort of a life-like universe from within. However, the absence of other types of ships does impact the life of the scene, as in it makes people wonder if only heavier based vessels can actually go inside.

A little more activity on the background clouds, like perhaps a storm brewing or something, would add a bit more life to the scene.

Other than that, it’s a great piece that could be improved upon a bit more but for the most part it’s good.

I love these shield worlds. It was so incredible in Halo Wars when the Spirit of Fire came out of that hole and you can see the ground on all sides.

tbh harvest was probaly more a shipyard than a shield world...it wasnt shrunken into subspace (where they could withstand the halos fire) like onyx nor protected by sentinels...which makes me think its more a dock than anything else

also..i love this picture...hasd it as my screensaver in college :3

The same thing was used in a space game called "Freelancer"
Although if such thing was constructed, space that is inside the sphere would have be extremely hot because it's isolated.

Yeah I heard about the one in Freelancer, there are quite a few of them in sci-fi novels and sci-fi series's such as startrek.

Okay :) I understand, i also don't tend to do tutorials. I guess i'll have to practice...

Just 2 things tho:

1. Do you start off by sketching the idea first? How do you start? I'm completely lost... :P

2. To what extent do you use photoshop's filters and stuff. I mean: Is it all just airbrush or do you use effects (aside from blending modes and custom brushes)

I do usually have a sketch and refine it a bit then go over it, as for photoshop I use Gausian blur and motion blur sometimes but not many other filters, High pass is usefull though.

No, thank YOU, for the fantastic work..

I'm totally new in this section of making digital art, and have no clue whatsoever on what to do and how to approach the subject.
Do you have any tips on this, everything from the really basic noob stuff to more advanced?
How do you go forward when you put together a picture?
I have PS CS3, but I don't know what to do with it?
Do I need any other software?
Realy apresiate it man,
and thanks again for the tremendous work you make.

Thanks, well CS 3 is fine as for tips I suggest going over a few tutorials, just type in the subject you want into the search bar and add "tutorial" to the end of it, should be a lot. Follow some of them to get the basics then just experiment

How long do you think one need to get a deasent grip of it?
How much time do you spend on a picture like Fortress World?

Well, I certainly don't have anything to mention in terms of the art itself (totally awesome!), but I do have one thing to say in regards to the design of this Shield World. The inside is too hollow. If I remember correctly the Dyson Sphere part of the Shield World exists at the center of planet, and by using a Slipspace manipulation device the inhabitable part is able to be significantly larger then the assigned space. (Think, TARDIS.)

And yes, I do realize that reaches truly astronomical levels of brain melting.

Yeah you are right but this is a different shield world, more based on the shield world from the game Halowars which is just like this one as it was used to house their big fleet. Also making a half constructed solid sphere would have been cool but not as good.

Makes sense. I mean, heck, the UNSC's ships run off the Rule Of Cool; it only seems right that the most advanced nation in the universe would have cool-technology that eclipses all other civilization's cool-powered tech.

i'm not so sure about that one. because of the light coming from the sun thing, it would be weird if there was darker colours on the land

Directly beneath the sun, I'd say yes. I left the comment a little vague because Rahll's critique had already mentioned it. As you move away from the sun, the colors could become more pronounced, drawing more emphasis to the enormity of the structure. it almost took a second look for me to realize that there was earthlike land under the sun.

its odd, its kind of inside and not inside, the world was kept safe in a area of space between spaces called slip space, an alternate dimension almost, so whilst it was actually huge (its radius stretched of the sun to earth) in onyx it would only take up an area of space no bigger than an atom, crazy crazy science hehe

Maybe I was just seeing your picture wrong, then. The whole Shield World thing is mind blowing in itself, so stuff in my head gets pretty screwy when I think about it. I wonder if those Spartans and the doctor are ever going to get out of it.

Incredibly beautiful and detailed image of the Shield World... reminds me of Halo Wars. Those Sentinels look just as I envisaged Onyx Sentinels to look, too! The only issue I can see is that the entire image is predominantly brown which makes it sort of flat. Perhaps a few other colours might bring the image out some more? The Sentinel towers are beautiful.
