This chunky looking thing was originally dubbed the "Bunker" and was also originally a smaller class of ship but having since dropped its class from the game we decided to resurrect the design for use as a larger Capital ship.
The ship is very heavily armoured and is meant as a closer quarters support vessel, it has tons of point defences and abilities that uses agro to force enemy ships to engage it rather than other ships in the fleet, its a tank and can take a lot of punishment. Its weapon systems aren't very powerful and mostly consist of point defences to counter fighters and bombers.
It primary function is to act as a buffer between the enemies fleet and your own soaking up vast amounts of damage that would otherwise cripple lesser ships

Also here is the latest alpha gameplay footage form the game where you can see another Capital ship (the Basilisk) being used, the model is old and is currently undergoing a re-modelling. [link]

Ahh, well the background stuff is always there I just make it invisible as they are on separate layers, all ships are on the same perspective grid and roughly the same size so I resize them to fit as and when needed.

Ah ok super thanks for the reply :) All your work is looking really good. Whats your drive to do a project like that? It must be hard, is it in your spare time with friends or whats the situation? :)

No the studio is a full game developer, we were at the PAX games convention in September where this game Novus Aeterno was unvieled to the public for the first time, its been in development for the past 4 years and started by a 19 year old who wanted to make a true MMORTS game set in space. We all came onto the project after being contacted by the guy who started it. I now work full time for the studio as do many others, there are about 11 people on the development team, and a further 4-5 on the business and admin side of things. We are indie but quite well equipped compared to most indie devs

Cool I've been following you on the novus -game and have seen some cool stuff :) I thought it was something you did with friends :)
Is it cool to work in a (smaller) Indie studio like that?
And how were the reactions on PAX?
Keep it up its looking cool ;)
grtz

It is good working in a small group as everyone has a say in the games development, we all guide the game in our own way whereas in a larger dev group that's left to the people who have been assigned that job. At PAX the game was well received as it was the first time its been shown to the public, we quickly made quite a reputation for ourselves :ahoy:

Would this also be the go-to ship for defense against fighters and bombers, or is there another ship for that?

This would be a good choice for point defence, lots of anti fighter/bomber weapons and heavy armour so it can take a lot of damage, its only real donwside is it lacks any decent ship-to-ship weaponry so its not very good used against larger ships, its solid support ship, also it has an agro ability that temporarily forces all nearby enemy ships to focus fire on it rather than other ships in your fleet

I've noticed that these pics all say "capital ship class" at the bottom. Does that mean that there will be cruisers/frigates or equivalents of them in the game?

Yes, the game has 4 basic hull types Corvette, Cruiser, Battleship, Dreadnought, and a possible 5th the Destroyer between Corvette and Cruiser. Each one of the Hull types can be customised with tons of weapons, engines, shields, armour, bays, storage and so on they are just empty hulls until you get hold of them.
Those 4 or 5 are the basic hull types used for everything from combat, colonisation, mining and transport what ever you want it to do, the Capital ship class are certain types of pre-fitted super ships that you can only have one active at any time, every single one does something unique and serves a particular role in a fleet. The final game will have a constant stream of capital ships, one released each month every month.

1) only one Capital ship of each type can be active, or just one period?

2) is it a "one per fleet" limit or "one per player" limit?

Its one per player, its where your character the general sits, you will be able to walk around the bridge and other areas of the ship as well eventually. You can have a collection of Capital ships that you can swap for another active one at any time, though you have to send the first one back to where you keep your ships, "park" it then bring out the new one, as different capital ships do different things its not always a case of getting the one with the most guns and armour, though if your like me that's what you will do anyway hehe

I wouldn't do that for a capital ship. My strategy with ultra-important units like that is to make it fast and make it long-ranged, so I can keep it out of trouble.

Then so far the Manticore [link] would be the ship for you, Its very long range, powerful, fast but very little armour so you'd need to keep it our of the main combat area

There is ship boarding and its evolved form originally an unseen event, to a tower defence type game and now closer to an actual FPS which is exciting. At the mont seiging a planet will take a while as its an MMO game we didn't want people to be able to steam roll through a system and capture planets in minutes, a heavily populated and built up planet could take days to seige and even longer if you want to keep the infrastructure intact by sending down troops rather than just blowing the shit out it from orbit.
At the moment its all just visual and you don't go down to the planet but in the future we plan on having an FPS where you can hop in and out of the ground combat at will, non intrusive so you can go down for a bit but if you get a warning from one of your fleets or planets simple jump out and back to your fleets, same will go for the boarding , you can join them if you want or leave them to it.

Were really not sure, we haven't even looked into that area in great detail yet, some headway has been made but we are focusing on the space stuff first seeing as that's about 99% of the game.

You did an excellent job of giving that 'weighed down' feel of a flying bunker. Despite my love of massive cannons I think I may actually favor this style instead, it's freaking AWESOME. *fits my style since I LOVE bunkers, and flying ones are even better!
