Mjolnir's Might by AdamBurn Mjolnir's Might by AdamBurn
So the new Luminarium Pack is out after some rather large set backs, but now you can all go and look at the amazing work that has been done for the new pack. There was no theme this time so we could do what we wanted.

So here is my first submission from the pack Majolnir's Might, depicting a scene from my own personal project based around a civil war between to human factions, this shows the Paragons latest tool of destruction, a huge dreadnought ship capable of single handedly laying waste to entire fleets and even planets. This scene shows the defending Librian fleet trying to suppress the approaching Paragon fleet..... Rather unsuccessfully I might add.

Enjoy

I really like the overall impression/look of the image. The colors and the light go together very well. A lot of action is happening but I think it really has the right amount of elements and isn't overloaded. It's a hard task to display epic mass-battle scenes in space and I only can imagine the time it took you to complete the ships.

My only critique are the two ships on the left that are flying towards viewer. I'm not sure about their actual size. The bigger problem is the one above the large battlecruiser. Perspective seems a bit off and it maybe would help to move it in front of the BC. Or enlarge the length of the jet blast to give it more depth and to define a certain size for this ship-class.

Nevertheless: keep up the good work! :)

Ive been a deviant member for quite a time, not as much as others but i take my time to check on and analyse the images that ive found. Uve got a lot of skill, so ive only managed to find one minor problem in the picture:

1.- The two ships, at the bottom of the picture, their beams seem to cause a mass destruction effect, like a nuclar bomb, still, i could notice that the clouds of the planet arent affected at all, usually they would form a circle around the center of the explosion.

Hope i didnt offended you, thanks for hear my opinion, i liked your work very much. Keep on the good work soldier.

Wow... just... wow... this is a really great pic. Heh, the concept sounds kinda familiar- I invented a huge planet-busting Dreadnought (The Purgatio Luminarium class Titan Dreadnought, Types I,II and III) for an alien race who were brilliant ship-builders with powerful telekinetic abilities but very frail bodies and who only have about 20-30 years of 'young adult' stage in a lifespan of 250 years. Hence why their standard tactic is orbital bombardment of enemy planets.

Of course your ship looks nothing like how mine would - mine would have smooth, elegant curves and lines.. I guess like a sleeker silver-grey, less beat-up looking Mon Calamari star cruiser? Sort of? But that ship looks pretty damn awesome.

Yes, the additional thrusters on the sides will definitely give the ship more lift against the pull of the planet's gravity field. It is so painful that these days very few artists give attention to the technical aspects of starship design, opting instead to give excuses with unseen thingamajig, omnipotent technologies.

I'm not premium so can't do a proper critique, but the first thing I notice is your tangents everywhere. It's when two objects and/or an object on the edge of the frame has its edge right up against the other. The corner of the engine at the top left and the frame, the ship in the middle right up against the curve of the world etc.

Tangents confuse the eye and make you think things are part of the same object, which in this case starts to mess with the sense of depth. Given that this is a space painting and you can't use color or saturation perspective, it's important to avoid tangents to make sure the linear perspective works well. Unfortunately to me at least it really messes with your composition. Besides that I really like the piece.

You make some good points, this is a rather old image and one of my first big space battles and as you said you cant use atmospheric perspective or lower saturation to push objects into the background further. The composition on this image is rather poor and I did learn from it, sadly its difficult picking out these errors on my own, after working on an image for a while you loose perspective on it, flipping the image or leaving it for a while tends to help but sometimes you still miss bits. Thanks for pointing out your finds though will definitely help with newer images set in space :ahoy:

I would have both arms cut off and go celibate for the rest of my life just to wash the latrines on that ship(obviously having my arms reattached to be able to do the job). That is certifiably bad - ass. Awesome work, mate.

I wouldn't mind being a port gun operator or a boarding crew marine either, though, I would assume that Mjolnir is advanced enough to have self cleaning latrines :P

Thanks :D

No problem, The key is to first make yourself a perspective grid so all the shapes are in the right place and flowing in the right direction. Then sketch out the ship in rough so you know what it will look like. After that use the Polygonal Lasso Tool, its where the normal lasso tool is but you have to right click on the icon to activate the Polygonal one. This will let you create straight edged shapes, once you make a shape either fill it or paint it a different colour or tone of grey. I make each "plate" a different tone of grey which correspond with the lighting.
Once you have the whole thing blocked out you then begin to add colour and finer details and texture.

Hope this helps, if not I will show you some progress images of this ship, they are going into a tutorial of sorts for the art group The Luminarium soon.

again i really feel bad about always asking for advice lol, but i'm having a bit of trouble with painting or texturing a planet, basically it's a very close up shot, similar to the planet in this painting but slightly closer, and the problem i'm having is it, like all my plantes i've done, just looks cluttered, rough, completely flat and unrealistic, can i ask what steps you usually do to create a planet that looks either right or realistic? the planets in paradise lost and derelict etc just look fantastic
thanks again, i really need to think of a way to repay you for all the help :D
