NA Environment Concepts 3 by AdamBurn NA Environment Concepts 3 by AdamBurn
My recent task working on the MMORTS game Novus Aeterno, along with the rest of the art team, was to make space less boring. In reality its very empty and black so we have been working on some ideas to make it feel more dynamic and interesting the first of these concepts is already in my gallery called "Solar Winds" this 2 image sheet is one of many.

The first image is one concept for a large space storm, they look similar to a double layered super cell only much larger and can span large distances as walls. They can be dangerous to ships passing through them due top frequent violent plasma discharges.
The second is a more nutty idea cooked up by our Creative Director, its called a Storm Core and it bursts into life starting small and gradually increases in size and power as shown above, it will wreak havoc in a system causing all sorts of nasty issues and limiting travel in a system until it dissipates or moves on.

Follow the games progress on Facebook, twitter and its new website.

I'd take a storm core over a black hole any day of the week.

awesome pieces!!!
i'll be working on something similar soon, but the task will be to make space seem hostile, empty, endless, so easier, just leave it blank :D
and on a way smaller scale than you stuff there...

if i may ask, how did you do the aurora-like lights?? is this just brushes and painting, or some special trick?? i've learned a lot recently, but i still have no idea how this effect is done! :( :worship:

naturally, fav! :)

Thanks mate, and I look forward to seeing what you cook up. The Aurora effects are done first using brushes to create a snaking pattern with a bit of depth, using screen mode on the brush itself and the layers to create areas of brightness and slightly different tones, then I select an area, duplicate it and add a strong vertical Motion blur, then I play around with layer modes and repeat it a few time. Its mostly down to experimenting, I've not done Aurora stuff before so I learnt a lot.
