This is a really special piece and one of my biggest achievements, Inspired heavily by the amazing Phoenix Nebula by Greg Martin i set about painting a nebula in a way i havnt done since my very first submission (Voyager) which is to do it by only using a brush, no textures or fractals like in all my other nebulae, i also wanted to create a phoenix as its my favorite mythical creature and it looks awesome.

Allot of the technique i have been experimenting with for a long time, looking over works by Greg Martin, Gary Tonge and Sumo Piggy and other artists who prefer to paint their nebulae, it gave me an idea of colour use and brush strokes.

Altogether it has taken me about 2 months working on and off, including the many failed attempts. Total of about 50 layers.

This marks my first year in the space art scene.. enjoy

I saw the thumbnail first and thought "Wow that looks like Greg's..." then i opened it up and MAN!!!

congrats my friend, this is oustanding. the details are so sharp and the brushstrokes so smooth - the whole thing flows so beautifully.

:D so epic...

just out of curiosity...have you done any mods for the game Empire at War? I ask because there is a guy on the Starwars.filefront who's mod is called Phoenix Rising.

Spectacular work Phoenix! Elegantly executed with vividly dynamic lighting and lustrous, crisp brush strokes, quite impressive, and it does indeed honour Greg's work. I can't really complain about any of the content, although I would suggest perhaps cropping some of the dark space and replacing it with a closer view of the nebulae (not unlike Greg's original I suppose, where you can see the details from a closer vantage point), otherwise superb without suggestion with the fear of making it slightly worse with only the chance of making it slightly better. Definite fav to see it with less negative space/tighter view. ;p
