Portals by AdamBurn Portals by AdamBurn
Nothing special just a quick 30 minutes speed painting messing with composition, lighting and some brushes. General concept is a series of giant portal arrays, 5 towers in each array which stretch miles high, and a little guy standing on top of a mountain. Wonder how he got there.

well for starters the guy must be hiking, so he must have some climbing gear to climb up on the mountain and camp under the portal arrays ;)

This reminds me a lot of the cover art for the book Halo: Cryptum.

Since my reference seems to have missed everyone, I'm just going to say that this could be great Half-Life fan art.

What with the Citadels and Freeman down there.

Oh my, that is quiet huge. The enormity of this painting is truly amazing because you put that one little man there. Is he the first and only contestant to enter the stair race to the top of one of those (which takes a half a lifetime to complete)?

On another subject, isn't there some method of painting in gray scale first and then adding color later?

Yeah hes the caretaker, he has to clean these things haha, though due to their size one person could only clean maybe 1 or 2 then die of old age, its not exactly the best job, good views though.
And yeah I usually work in grey scale first then overlay colour on top, I find it a lot easier, but sometimes I will start some areas off in colour just to get the mood set

The few paintings that I started I started in color, and just never gotten around to finishing them. Perhaps you can help me out with how to do gray scale first then add color. xD

Maybe, its generally using layer modes such as colour dodge and overlay then using hue and saturation levels and lightness to make the colours exactly the right tone

Very nice. It took me a second to find the man, good way to show the scale. I have no idea why, but the intricate paneling and solid geometric shapes make me think Halo concept art.

Yep, he has to travel around, walk mainly, and fix them if anything goes wrong, ow and clean the of course, these big things attract a lot of dirt

The grey scale is also what makes it so fast, working in colour always takes so long, for me anyway

yeah, color always complicates things, but even a grayscale drawing in pencil for me takes hours. one that i just did for school isnt that greatly shaded and it took me over 8 hours <,<. obviously i'm not at your skill level, but 30 minutes for that kind of quality is still blindingly fast.

Digital helps, you have many different brushes that can cut time but mostly its practice, at least a year ago something like this would have taken me about 3 hours haha

Youd be supprised how many people dont read the description, I often get lots of questions about an image regarding its concept and story, or what the hell is going on, I then have to ask them to read the description.

mysterious, creepy. the monoliths look reminicent of another one of your drawings. erm...something about ships taking off to go back to earth and make it green again.
