Whats this? no stars, no planets..... no space, is this really an image by me? Well yes, Ive been practicing with matte painting for a while in my own time and this is an image I decided to do after I thought I had practiced enough. Due to the resolution of the image, 7000x4000, A lot of the elements had to be hand painted to keep up the image quality. The main cloud formation was done using some 50 cloud images and some hand painted areas. The ground again is mostly photos, the shard is all hand painted as are the jets and the red and blue cloud areas and lightning. The planes where especially hard, I had referance photos of the planes which I used to get the shape and used as a referance to get the details right.
This is basically a concept for a movie idea I had based on my last image, Shards, the concept is what would happen if they came to earth, kinda War of the Worlds meets The Day After Tomorrow, I will do some more matte paintings based around this concept over time. The cloud is based around a super cell and the bottom is based around volcanic pyroclastic flows.
Anyway enough chit chat go look for yourself
Enjoy

My eyes just expanded to the size of dinner plates. Awesome picture. I has a question though. Top middle of the pic there looks like a tooth-pick...is that a projectile coming from the main ship or is it a smaller 'fighter' ship?
I usually lay down the basic form of the background and colours but I then tend to work on the foreground elements first then finish the background, but not allways, sometimes the background is done way before the rest.
