Deviousness |
I don't think a whole race would risk it's whole society on one large transport, espicially traveling the large dangerous vastness of space. 1000 bad shit stuff could happen before reaching the targeted planet. ID4 deserves a sequel, would be cool to see 2nd mothership investigating the loss of the first fleet.
The alien mothership though massive was a slow moving thing; if the alien that first crash landed in the 40's that the mther ship was entering the solar system at the best speed it could. Taking 50 years to arrive on Earth in the mid 90's, likely a second was close by taking message from the other fleet when it was lost.
I a have couple of ideas that would make sequels work.
1) Ships: All of the alien's ship fleets should look different from the other; some motherships, destroyes, transports and attackers having different size and shape (especially the destroyer and attacker, which were the ones we most saw in the film and the ones that were doing the job)
2) First Invaders: I like the idea of some of the aliens survive the fail invasion and are now sugjugated into human mistreatment, if there were survivors, these guys would feel the terror of humanity's vengeful side. But love the idea that in truth they are buying time for the arrival of another mothership and they get rejected by their own kind for been defeated by a lower species and forcing the survivors into siding with the abusing still pissed humans or trying to return to their own indifferent kind that no longer wants them.
3) First fleet tech: I have this image in mind that with nearly 20 destroyers and thousands of attackers, at least one destroyer was captured intact. Having lost all defense means, and contact with rest of the fleet, that the last ship was given an ultimatum; "surrender of die like the others". These allowing mankind to studied and in a small way reverse engeneer their tech to their own in case history repeated.
4) More in depth history of the aliens; what disaster, natural or selfmade, lead to the aliens to go from planet to planet to find resources and wipeout whole races. In the film, we have a explanation for their actions, but not a reason that lead to into this path.
Commander: "I can tell that. However, I'm more concerned about our fleet on Earth."
I thought the fins went with the Mothership, but it's been ages since I saw the movie. If they do a sequel, I hope it's like the book ID4: War in the Desert. Silent Zone would be a great prequel too, though I think Brent Spiner is too old to play Dr. Okun anymore.
But I think I would definitely hate a sequel. There is no logic (and enjoyable) way of continuing it, it was their WHOLE civilization after all ,which got bombed into space.
