The Wreck ID4 2 by AdamBurn The Wreck ID4 2 by AdamBurn
Some of you should recognise the name ID4 from the 1996 blockbuster hit Independence Day, a great movie and one of my favourites.
The man behind it, Roland Emmerich, has spoken about making a sequel and maybe turning it into a trilogy.
I just had to have ago at creating some illustrations based on a possible sequel.
There will be a series of images, this one, The Wreck, depicts an opening scene showing the 2 fin like structures that were located on the belly of the 500km long Mothership, since it was nuked the fins flew off towards the moon smashing into it at quite a speed, this left a mess of debris and dust. The alien race obviously miffed as to why one of their fleets suddenly went dark have sent a few scout ships to investigate. They will not be happy.

So in short; they sent a carrier in the first movie and a miner in the second. Hmm.

This is absolutely beautiful. I never ever even thought that there were pieces left of the wreck as the nuke scene showe the utter disintegration of the mothership.  I suppose for twenty years (since I was nine years old when I fist saw the movie) I was pretty naïve to think that there wouldn't be anything left but atoms. One must ask themselves though, surely such an alien race has encountered resistance on a scale like this before? As for me, I've always theorized this was a simple harvester-Mothership, with a sizable clutch of troops and standard terraforming security. If that's the case then what does an space borne battleship with the purpose of utter annihilation rather than a resource collector look like? Have they even got repair space stations after a few hundred ops, or planets that have been turned into factories to churn fleets of these things out? I'm sure the alien pilot fed false information about their entire civilization onboard just one ship to the president during its attempt at mind-frying him, or perhaps the president only saw a fraction of what this race does. Next to the space jockeys (disregarding that horrible excuse of a movie called Prometheus) from Alien and the Dark Horse comics of Aliens, this ID4 race has never failed to captivate me with its twenty-year old mystery. Like in the movie-tie-in novel "War in the Desert" one of the secondary characters thinks to themselves why would a child-sized race of aliens need to engineer everything on such massive levels of size? I love the way the moon looks, the debris, this is what the people need to see as an opening. An ironic opening to the epic should be "Here I come to rape your world for its resources and I'm a huge motherfucker," like the first movie, only in the opening of the second movie it is a piece of the wreck that rolls forward and the audience is sucked backwards in the camera's POV whilst tracing itself through the wrecked innards out the other side of the said "piece" of the ship as it spins aimlessly in lunar orbit.

Well, now that we know there WILL be a sequel, this would be a great opening scene.

I am a BIG fan of ID4 and I absolutely love your painting. I really hope that there will be a sequel one day... In the meantime, I just feast my eyes on your work and look forward to the promissed series of images ;) This one is perfect! I do envy you and I bow before your talent.

Love the alien ships; the attacker are my favorites, they look cool. As for a sequel, I would not oppose the idea.

I don't think a whole race would risk it's whole society on one large transport, espicially traveling the large dangerous vastness of space. 1000 bad shit stuff could happen before reaching the targeted planet. ID4 deserves a sequel, would be cool to see 2nd mothership investigating the loss of the first fleet.

The alien mothership though massive was a slow moving thing; if the alien that first crash landed in the 40's that the mther ship was entering the solar system at the best speed it could. Taking 50 years to arrive on Earth in the mid 90's, likely a second was close by taking message from the other fleet when it was lost.

I a have couple of ideas that would make sequels work.

1) Ships: All of the alien's ship fleets should look different from the other; some motherships, destroyes, transports and attackers having different size and shape (especially the destroyer and attacker, which were the ones we most saw in the film and the ones that were doing the job)

2) First Invaders: I like the idea of some of the aliens survive the fail invasion and are now sugjugated into human mistreatment, if there were survivors, these guys would feel the terror of humanity's vengeful side. But love the idea that in truth they are buying time for the arrival of another mothership and they get rejected by their own kind for been defeated by a lower species and forcing the survivors into siding with the abusing still pissed humans or trying to return to their own indifferent kind that no longer wants them.

3) First fleet tech: I have this image in mind that with nearly 20 destroyers and thousands of attackers, at least one destroyer was captured intact. Having lost all defense means, and contact with rest of the fleet, that the last ship was given an ultimatum; "surrender of die like the others". These allowing mankind to studied and in a small way reverse engeneer their tech to their own in case history repeated.

4) More in depth history of the aliens; what disaster, natural or selfmade, lead to the aliens to go from planet to planet to find resources and wipeout whole races. In the film, we have a explanation for their actions, but not a reason that lead to into this path.

Alien 1: "Commander, we've lost contact with the Mothership!"
Commander: "I can tell that. However, I'm more concerned about our fleet on Earth."

Excellent work!

I thought the fins went with the Mothership, but it's been ages since I saw the movie. If they do a sequel, I hope it's like the book ID4: War in the Desert. Silent Zone would be a great prequel too, though I think Brent Spiner is too old to play Dr. Okun anymore.

I lovethis movie and roland emmerich is the best at visual effects

This picture is just awesome and the idea of parts of the mothership crashing onto the moons surface is great.
But I think I would definitely hate a sequel. There is no logic (and enjoyable) way of continuing it, it was their WHOLE civilization after all ,which got bombed into space.

I really hope you're right about the sequel or even trilogy! Would be great!

Roland Emmerich is a genius!:3

I somewhat agree with you. While I do think there are better directors than Emmerich out there, there is  one of many things I do agree with you on: he is not as bad as Michael Bay, or Uwe Boll.:) (Smile)

My god i never thought about this. This is an amazing concept! I always thought that the mothership that came to Earth was basically it. But putting in the plot twist that there are "more" out there, and decide to take a detour to Earth because we destroyed one of their motherships is a catching idea. And with today's computer graphics?? Oh yeah, Independence Day 2!

Really great concept idea! I think they do a reversal of rolls where humanity, using reverse engineered alien tech, spread out across the galaxy and conquer other civilizations to meet the demands of rebuilding a devastated Earth and to feed the growing Human Empire.
AdamBurn Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
Sounds rather far fetched, plus would take ages to learn anything from those aliens I guess
Artemsis Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2009
That is true now that you mention it. The fact that they could only learn so much from the crashed attacker fifty years ago supports that. But, I would think with the surplus of alien tech lying all around Earth that something new might be learned.

I like the little things about this picture that make it perfect. Like how the lights along the eastern seaboard, Mexico City, and southern California are conspicuously absent.

Independence Day... that movie scared me so much when I was younger; I hated alien movies; aside from Men in Black, that is.

But now it's one of my favorites; and a classic! Great picture, and an interesting concept to boot. I'd love to see more.
